Adam Telfer was the fourth child of James Telfer (1761–1830) and Elizabeth Hutton (1774–1851) of Castleton, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He was the brother of Francis Telfer who emigrated to South Australia.
Unlike several of his siblings, Adam's fate after the family left Scotland is not fully documented. He is listed in the family records alongside his brothers James, Robert, John, Francis, and William, and sisters Isobel and Margaret.
